Another fantastic Brazilian Choro Night will take place in Grounds Rotterdam!
With a line-up of great Brazilian masters Rogerio Souza and Gabriel Grossi, charismatic Brazilian singer Lilian Vieira, and european musicians with a brazilian heart Martin Heap (DK), Udo Demandt (D), Jeroen van der Ley (NL), Wiboud Burkens (NL) and Marijn van der Linden (NL) .
Concert starts at 20:30.
All day you can enjoy the best Brazilian food, snacks and drinks made by Natural do Brasil (www.naturaldobrasil.nl) After 17:00 you can also have dinner while listening to live Brazilian music in the Grounds cafe.
During the day you can follow lessons in choro at our school, workshops Capoeira by Capoeiraschool Berimbau de ouro, and a masterclass by Rogerio.
Rogerio Souza
Brazilian guitarist, born 1956, composer and arranger from Rio de Janeiro, is one of the most important representatives of the genuine Brazilian guitar tradition. Has since his professional debut in the early 1980’ties been involved in big events in the Brazilian popular music, specially the choro and the samba, participating as musician, arranger and music director in tv-sessions, recordings and concerts.
Has played and recorded with a variety of Brazilian top-artists: Baden Powell, Sivuca, Raphael Rabello, Turibio Santos, Paulinho da Viola, João Bosco, Ney Matogrosso, Ivan Lins, the choro-group Época De Ouro and many others.
Co-founder of the Rio de Janeiro-based group, Nó em Pingo D’Água, one of Brazil’s most innovative choro ensembles. The group has released several cd’s that explore new aspects of both the choro and samba-traditions. As an arranger, Rogerio has worked with top-artists such as Ivan Lins, Sergio Ricardo, Delcio Carvalho, and for the singer Ney Matogrosso’s Batuque show, touring for two years throughout Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Portugal.
Lilian Vieira
The Brazilian-Dutch singer and lyric writer Lilian Vieira (Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro) moved at age 23 she to The Netherlands, where she, due to her special timbre, great improvisation skills and charismatic stage presence develops as a noted singer. This is partly due to her role in the Brazilectro group Zuco 103. Vieira – primarily singing in Portuguese – also works with multiple jazz-, soul- and funkbands and various DJs. As a guest vocalist she collaborated on dozens of albums. The past years she has returned to her musical roots, with the singing of popular Brazilian music and classical acoustic Samba that eventually inspired her to record her own solo album.
Martin Heap
Danish guitarist, born 1974. Has for more than 10 years been dedicated to the choro music in its authentic expression and form, and has performed and recorded in Europe as well as in Brazil with notable choro musicians Mauricio Carrilho and Marcílio Lopes.
Gabriel Grossi
Gabriel Grossi is considered one of the greatest harmonica players in the world, developing unusual paths for the insertion of his instrument into the rich uni- verse of Brazilian music.
Although young, Gabriel has an extensive trajectory. In addition to his well established solo career he is, since 2005, member of the Hamilton de Holan- da Quintet, winner of the 2007 Tim prize and Latin Grammy Awards finalist for three consecutive times. He collaborated in important projects like touring with the late clarinetist Paulo Moura, with whom he played from 2003 until his death, and the singers Zelia Duncan and Beth Carvalho, with whom he record- ed CDs and DVDs.
His debut album, “Diz Que Fui Por Aí” received praises for musical composition and arrangement s. The second, “Afinidade” (a duet with the great guitarist Marco Pereira), and the third, “Arapuca” (inspired by the universe of forró) also won critical and audience acclaim, showing that it is possible to combine the tradition of instrumental music with popular taste, promoting his name for national recognition.
In 2009 he formed his trio with Guilherme Ribeiro (piano) and Sergio Machado (drums). With this lineup Gabriel recorded “Horizonte”, an album composed during the tour that he performed with the renowned trombonist Raul de Sou- za. In 2011 he released the CD “Zibididi” with award-winning guitarist Diego Figueiredo, album composed exclusively of new material.
In 2012, Gabriel released two more works, the CD “Villa Lobos Popular”, a duo with pianist Amilton Godoy (Zimbo Trio) and the album “Realejo” with accordi- onist Bebe Kramer. His last work was released in 2013 and titled “Urbano”, with modern themes and a modern approach within the universe of the harmonica. With 8 albums released, recordings and concerts with big names from Brazil- ian and worldwide music like: Hermeto Pascoal, Chico Buarque, Ivan Lins, Leila Pinheiro, João Donato, Dave Matthews, Guinga, Lenine, Djavan, Milton Nasci- mento, Dominguinhos, Maria Bethania, Ney and Hamilton de Holanda and oth- ers. Touring around the world, Gabriel collects an extensive curriculum adding unique experience, receiving accolades from the ones who really knows what they are talking about:

Udo Demandt
Born and raised in Germany, started playing drums when I was 8 years old, and soon playing in various bands all kinds of styles.
His fascination with Latin music led me to study drums and percussion at the Rotterdams Conservatory in The Netherlands where he’s now based
Udo plays drums and percussion in a broad range of styles, from Flamenco to Brazilian music.
Marijn van der Linden
Started playing guitar at the age of 6, First classical, later on also electric. He finished his study (jazz) improvisation at the conservatory of Tilburg in 2005. His passion is Brazilian music, especially choro and samba, and plays cavaquinho and violão 7 cordas (7string guitar). Marijn plays in various groups, for which he also composes and arranges. In 2012 he founded the Escola Portátil de Música Holanda in Rotterdam, a unique musicschool specialized in Brazilian choro and samba, which is the first company of EPM (Rio de Janeiro) outside of Brazil.
Wiboud Burkens (1966) – keyboards, producer, songwriter
For more then 20 years active in the music bizz in a wide variety of music genres, from soul/funk tot pop, crossover/jazz, world and filmmusic. He arranged and composed for large ensembles such asKindred Spirits Ensemble, Motion Unlimited and produced and/or played on over 65 cd’s from jazz to hiphop, soul, world & pop.
Together with his friend and bassplayer Manuel Hugas he is the co-founder and songwriter/producer of soul group Liquid Spirits. They produced 2 worldwide highly good reviewedalbums, a third is in the make.
In the recent years Wiboud produced 2 albums for Jungle by Night (2012, 2014), Rob van Wouw ‘Neon’ (released on Bugge Wesseltoft’s Jazzland – 2013) , Lilian Vieira (2014) as well as Re:freshed Orchestra.
He has the pleasure to work with Leon Ware, produced and wrote for Lalah Hathaway. He is MD for the projectgroup ‘Daughters of Soul’, performing with artists such as Chaka Kahn, Denise Williams, Lalah Hathaway and Sandra st. Victor.
